Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory Director
Oversees the cardiac catheterization laboratory staff and procedures carried out at the
hospital.
Cardiology Director
Responsible for the cardiology department, which includes all cardiologists in a hospital.
Case Management Director
Affiliated with or part of the social services department. Provides patient case
assessment, treatment planning, referral and follow-up.
Central Supply Services Director
Oversees the maintenance and distribution of the supplies and equipment to meet the needs of
all the institution’s departments. In addition, central supply can provide internal control to
monitor governmental restrictions, laws, and infection control standards regulating medical
facilities.
Central/Sterile Services Director
Responsible for the department which provides sterile medical and surgical instruments and
supplies. The pharmacy is not part of this department.
Chemical/Substance Abuse Director
Oversees chemical and substance abuse programs in the hospital.
Chief Administrator
This person is the primary executive in charge of all the hospital's operations. The chief
administrator's actual title may be CEO, President, Vice President, etc. There is significant but
not complete duplication with the Chief Executive Officer job function.
Chief Executive Officer
Appointed by the governing body to direct the overall management of the hospital. This list
includes only those administrators with the title of CEO. There is significant duplication with the
Chief Administrator; for complete coverage, choose both titles.
Chief Financial Officer
Oversees all aspects of the institution’s finances from budgeting to payroll.
Chief Information Officer
The CIO is responsible for technology purchasing and manages the information systems in a
hospital. There is some duplication with Information System/MIS Director.
Chief Operations Officer
Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the hospital. Usually oversees
volunteer/support services. Also known as executive director.
Clinical Coordinator of Emergency Room
Oversees all aspects of the hospital emergency room. See also Physician Director/Emergency
Room.
Continuing Education Director
Responsible for evaluation, development, and implementation of continuing education programs
for health professionals.

Discharge Planning Director
Sets up discharge of a patient, schedules visits if needed, and gives patient prescriptions.
DRG Coding Director
Responsible for duties related to the prospective payments system (PPS). The duties typically
include early determination of the patient’s Diagnosis Related Group (DRG); informing the attending
physician of the normal length of stay, according to the DRG; and providing additional information
from the case mix index management information system.

Facility/Plant Manager
Responsible for the physical plant of the hospital and its functionality. The manager
oversees maintenance, janitorial services, repair, installation of equipment, troubleshooting, etc.
Family Practice Director
Coordinates the involvement of family practice within the hospital. Family practice
specializes in providing, supervising, and coordinating the continuing general medical care of
patients of all ages, primarily in family groups.
Food Services Director
Oversees the employees of the food service department as well as the planning, purchasing,
and preparation of food services in a hospital.
Formulary Committee Chairman
Oversees the list of prescription drugs that various health plans have approved for use by

diseases, and pathology of the stomach and intestines.

Coordinates efforts pertaining to treatment of diseases that primarily affect the elderly.

Oversees compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, which
defines the rights and responsibilities that patients, healthcare providers and health plans have

Home Healthcare Services Director
Manages the department of the hospital which provides medical and other health
services in the patient’s home.
Hospitalist
Doctors whose primary focus is the general medical care of hospital patients. Their
responsibilities include patient care, research, and leadership related to hospital care.
Coordinates with patient’s primary care/referring physician.
Housekeeping Director
Supervises housekeeping staff, procedures, scheduling, and purchasing of housekeeping and
janitorial services and supplies.
Human Resources Director
Responsible for all personnel functions including hiring, benefits, training, equal
opportunity issues, etc.

In-Service Education Director
Organizes classes and training sessions for internal staff members of the hospital. Some
duplication with Patient Education Director.
Infection Control Director
Manages the hospital’s program of infection control including sanitizing, cleaning,
disinfecting, decontaminating, and sterilizing medical products and devices that are essential to
safe patient care and staff welfare. Some duplication with Infectious Disease Director.
Infectious Disease Director
Supervises the department that cares for both in- and out-patients with complex problems
involving a wide variety of infectious diseases. Some duplication with Infection Control Director.
Information Systems/MIS Director
Oversees the computer system/data processing for the entire hospital. Some duplication with
Chief Information Officer.
Intensive Care/Critical Care Director
Oversees all aspects of the ICU/CCU, including budgeting and employees.
Internal Medicine Chief
Oversees the internal medicine department. This branch of medicine deals with diagnosis and
medical (non-surgical) therapy of disorders and diseases of the internal structures of the body.

Medical Director
Oversees and handles problems for each independent unit that has its own medical director
(such as skilled nursing, ICU, etc.).
Medical Library Director
Oversees the medical library in a hospital.
Medical Records Director
Responsible for processing patient records, and making sure forms are completed and signed
by nurse and doctor.
Medical Staff Chief
Oversees the entire medical staff. This position is always held by a physician.

Neurosurgery Chief
Oversees the neurosurgery department. Neurosurgery is the branch of medicine which
performs surgery on the brain and spinal cord.
Nuclear Medicine Director

Nursing Director
Oversees the entire nursing staff, serving as an administrative liaison between the

Pastoral Care Director
